Bratan Lake

Posted by balistudent on Monday 12 July 2010

Bratan Lake is located next to Mount Bratan and Mount Catur. It is the second largest lake in Bali. Filling the crater of the inactive volcano Mount Catur, Bratan Lake sits at over 1,200 meters above sea level. The important temple of Pura Ulun Danu solemnly guards the lake. The resort area of Bedugul offers excellent views of the lake, as well as a number of water activities. Providing a cool retreat from the hot and humid regions of Bali, its shores provide the traveler with hotels and restaurants and its cool waters offer parasailing, water-skiing, banana-boat rides and other water sports. Some Japanese caves across the lake were dug during World War II. While in the area hike to the beautiful shrines that dot the lakeshore and forested hills around the lake or visit the beautiful Pura Ulun Danu Bratan.

Not far from here are Buyan Lake and Tamblingan Lake, two of the four large lakes on Bali, which can also be worth a visit. Bratan has an altitude of about 1.000 meters, the climate is quite comfortable, at nights we may even need some warm cloths. The area round the lake is well equipped to cater for visitors, with facilities for various water sports (motorboats, water-skiing, bathing) and a good restaurant.

Mount Agung

Mount Agung is Bali's biggest trekking challenge. The most revered and the highest peak in Bali, Mount Agung stands tall at over 3100 meters. Fortunately, Bali's highest and most revered mountain is not difficult to climb. The tip is to start well before dawn, armed with a strong flashlight, water, food, and warm and waterproof clothing. The best time for a climb is during the dry season of April through October. But climbing is not permitted when major religious events are held at Pura Besakih, which is most of April. The shortest and most popular route up Mount Agung is from Selat or Muncan; involving the least walking due thankfully to serviceable roads from both Selat or Muncan town to the Pura Pasar Agung, or Agung Market Temple. From the temple, we can climb to top in as little as 2 short hours.

Still an active volcano Mount Batur sits 1,500 meters above sea level and takes about an hour's drive northeast of Denpasar. Smoking and rumbling takes place periodically at this mountain. Two eruptions occurred in 1917 and 1926 and more recently in 1994. A crater lake was formed about 30,000 years ago after a major eruption. Many vantage points offer spectacular views of the area. Hiking tours start at 3a and end at 6a when one reaches the summit to view a beautiful sunrise.

The Balinese consider Mount Agung to be the center of the world. All temples in Bali point towards Mount Agung. The Mother Temple of Besakih, with its uncountable steps, solemnly wait for the arrival of the gods and the goddesses, for when they step down from heaven, they come to Besakih by way of Mount Agung.

Legian Beach

Close to the Kuta action but far enough for some down time, Legian is less hectic than downtown Kuta but still has a funky nightlife zone. Legian is a no-holds barred beach where locals, expatriates and tourists mingle, bargain with the best, play paddle ball and football, indulge in a massage and manicure, catch up on reading, meditate, exercise. Legian and Seminyak were small villages a few years ago a short distance from Kuta.

Over the last few years, accommodation has expanded around Legian with many simple family-owned guest houses upgraded; complemented by boutique style hotels and first class hotels. Kuta is literally five-minute taxi ride away. Sunset is peak time at Legian Beach, when the beach bars fill up, the football field is at its busiest and the locals knock off work and wade fully clothed, skirts swirling, into the waves. Now part of the greater Kuta area, both offer quieter alternatives and a more sophisticated nightlife scene focusing on dining-out and socializing rather than full-on partying.

Elephant Cave

Goa Gajah, literally means 'Elephant Cave”. Although named by 'elephant' it doesn't mean there is any real elephant live or ever live here. The name Goa Gajah derived from 'Lawa Gajah', which is mentioned in the manuscripts that found in this site. This temple complex was built for the first time around 11 century based on epigraph found in this site.

A seven-meters deep cave with a shape of T-letter is the major attraction of this Bedulu village's local temple. The cave it self is carved in a solid stone hill of the river valley. The main figure of the carving at the cave entrance is 'boma', a barong face, accompanied with big clapping fingers on its side. Leaf, flower, and some horror figures can be noticed if we give more attention look to the rest of the carving. Some holes that are considered to be used as meditation or sleeping quarters can be found in the wall of the cave. Nowadays, those holes are used to place offerings whenever there is ceremonies taking place. On the left end side of the cave is Ganesha statue, believe it as 'the God of knowledge'. Meanwhile on the right end side can be found three 'linggas', that each of them dedicated to the three common God manifestations in Bali, Brahma, Wisnu, and Siwa. There are other three stone carvings in the centre wall, one of them figuring head and face.

Three other statues of Ganesha, demons and Men Brayut, a legendary lady with her beloved children, are placed on a high building located on the left side of cave entrance. It is considered that these statues are 1000 years old. In the middle of the complex, in front of the cave, there is bathing place that is not any longer used by the local people. The angle figures within the bathing complex are about similar to common figures found in India. On the south part of the complex, there are along flight of step leads down the lower part of the valley. After crossing a bridge above a small creek and follow another flight of steps up to eastern side of the valley, a headless sitting Buddha statue can be seen. This is the evident of a close relationship between the two religions.

Batur Lake

Posted by balistudent on Sunday 11 July 2010

Batur Lake is the old crater of Mount Batur, a still active volcano next to it. It is located on the northern part of Bali. The largest lake overshadowed by the active volcano is located in Bangli Regency, at the northeast of Bali. Batur Lake is the widest lake in this island. It lies down in the feet of Mount Batur and Mount Abang. The lake is classified as a "neutral-dilute" lake because there is no known underlying hydrothermal activity, and the abundant rainfall more than quenches any such activity. There is a hot spring right by the lake. We can enjoy the spectacular scenery of Batur Lake from Kintamani. Across the lake, only reachable by boat, lies Trunyan village, where the Bali Aga people live. The surrounding of the lake is a favorite place for picks self up. At Batur Lake we can see the scenic view and feel cool atmosphere. Bangli's mountainous region center is around the spectacular volcanic crater (or caldera) of Batur. Mount Batur adjacent to the volcano is the large crescent-shaped Batur Lake, all surrounded by the high walls of the crater rim. The place is a great day trips, trekking or just to get away from the daily activity.

Mount Batur itself is actually just a small volcano, but sets in the heart of a huge crater 14km in diameter. Adjacent to the volcano is the large crescent-shaped Batur Lake, all surrounded by the high walls of the crater rim. As the road rises steadily from Bangli or Tampaksiring, nothing in the surrounding gray landscape of bushes and garden plots suggests the presence of a volcano. But over one more small ridge a dizzying view awaits the ayes, encompassing the crater and beyond. From Panelokan, the main road runs right round the rim towards Kintamani, the panorama shifting as we circle around the crater. One very interesting excursion in Batur is the climb down the inside of the crater from Penelokan to Kedisan. We can then drive around the smaller Mount Batur, through Songan. From Toya Bungkah, boats cross the lake to a Bali Aga village called Trunyan. This place is notorious for its mortuary traditions. Instead of cremating the dead, as Balinese do throughout most of the island, the Trunyan communities leave the bodies to decompose naturally in a special cemetery.

Ancient rituals pay homage to the guardian spirits of the sea. Besakih Temple (Mother Temple)

Posted by balistudent

Over a thousand years old, Besakih Temple is known as the "Mother Temple of Bali" Perched on the slopes of Mount Agung, at a lofty 1,000 meters (3,000 feet). Besakih is the biggest and holiest of all the Balinese temples. Bali's mother temple stands against a stupendous mountain backdrop on the southeastern slopes of Mount Agung. Named after the Dragon God believed to inhabit the mountain, it's said to be the only temple where a Hindu of any caste can worship.

Eighteen separate sanctuaries belonging to different regencies and caste groups surround the three main temples dedicated to Shiva, Brahma and Vishnu. To the Balinese, visiting the temple sanctuaries is a special pilgrimage. The mountain top setting gives it an almost mystical quality.
The largest on the island, this massive complex of 35 small temples attracts staggering numbers each year, being the main point of pilgrimage for Balinese Hindus. Steps ascend through split gates to the main courtyard where the Trinity shrines, dedicated to Shiva, Brahma, and Vishnu, are wrapped in cloth and decorated with flower offerings. There are number of temples but many of their inner courtyards are closed to visitors. Tracing its origins to prehistoric times, the complex was untouched by the great 1963 eruption of Mount Agung, which wiped out surrounding villages. The complex also houses the oldest remaining gamelan instrument in Bali called selonding. The temple ceremony (odalan) falls on the 10th month of the Balinese calendar, in April. If traveling, try to reach Pura Besakih before 9am, when many tourist buses start to arrive, so that we can take in the lovely temple in the quiet Balinese morning.

Trunyan

Posted by balistudent

Trunyan is another ancient village inhabited by people who call themselves the “Bali Aga” or old Bali who live in ways that are vastly different from other Balinese. The Bali Aga's temple in this village is named Puser Jagat, meaning Navel of the Universe. Its architecture is highly unusual, and stands in the protective shade of a massive banyan tree.

The Bali Aga has a strange way of burial. Instead of cremating their corpses, the Bali Aga simply places them under this banyan tree. The odor is mysteriously masked by a special arboreal fragrance emitted by the banyan tree.

The village of Trunyan is squeezed tightly between the lake and the outer crater rim of Batur, an almighty volcano in Kintamani. This is a Bali Aga village, inhabited by descendants of the original Balinese, the people who predate the arrival of the Hindu Majapahit kingdom in the 16th century. It is famous for the Pura Pancering Jagat temple, but unfortunately visitors are not allowed inside. There is also a couple of traditional Bali Aga-style dwellings, and a large banyan tree, which is said to be more than 1,100 years old. At Kuban sub-village close to Trunyan is a mysterious cemetery that is separated by the lake and accessible only by boat, there is no path along the steep walls of the crater rim.

Unlike the Balinese people, Trunyan people do not cremate or bury their dead, but just lay them out in bamboo cages to decompose, although strangely there is no stench. A macabre collection of skulls and bones lies on the stone platform and the surrounding areas. The dead bodies don't produce bad smells because of the perfumed scents from a huge Taru Menyan tree growing nearby. Taru means 'tree' and Menyan means 'nice smell'. The name of Trunyan was also derived from these two words. The women from Trunyan are prohibited from going to the cemetery when a dead body is carried there. This follows the deeply rooted belief that if a woman comes to the cemetery while a corpse is being carried there, there will be a disaster in the village, for example a landslide or a volcanic eruption. Such events have been frequent in the village's history, but whether women had anything to do with it is a matter of opinion.

The temple, Pura Bukit Sari, was originally built around the 17th century as an agricultural temple and has been restored several times, most recently in 1973. In the central courtyard, a large statue of Garuda, an old carving of uncertain date, symbolizes freedom from suffering and the attainment of amerta, the elixir of life. The forest of nutmeg trees in which it lies was presumably planted deliberately a long time ago, for it is unique in Bali.

Come on, baby! Checker marks 50 years of the Twist

Posted by balistudent on Friday 9 July 2010

Fifty years to the day after the release of the hip-swiveling tune "The Twist," the man who made it famous celebrated the occasion in his hometown.

Chubby Checker performed Friday at a free noontime concert at Philadelphia City Hall. About 1,000 people joined in on the gyrations, some even invited onstage by the South Philadelphia-bred singer.

"The Twist," released as a single on July 9, 1960, burst into the rock 'n' roll stratosphere after Checker performed it for Dick Clark on his Philadelphia-based "American Bandstand."

Checker's 1960 cover version of the Hank Ballard and the Midnighters song — released a year earlier to mild success — became a smash hit and turned the dance into a pop culture touchstone. It remains the only single to reach No. 1 on the U.S. charts during two separate runs, in 1960 and again in 1962.

The dance popularized couples dancing apart to the beat of the music, a revolutionary idea that's now the norm, Checker said.

"When you're on the floor dancing to Lady Gaga, Chubby Checker is there," he said.

The trim 68-year-old singer, clad in a denim jacket and skintight jeans, performed some of his other dance-craze hits including "The Fly," "Pony Time" and "The Hucklebuck," a dance with some suggestive hip thrusts that Checker executed with ease.

"Back in the 60s, you couldn't do the hucklebuck because it was nasty," Checker told the crowd. "It's 2010; everything's nasty, so we're going to do it."

Checker brought groups of fans onstage throughout the concert. Ages, sizes and senses of rhythm varied widely, but no one was short of enthusiasm.

He also sang a medley of other singers' hits from the era, from Chuck Berry and Little Richard to The Beatles' "I Saw Her Standing There."

The finale, of course, was "The Twist," which kept the crowd going despite temperatures around 90 degrees.

"If you ain't moving to this, well, then, you've got to be dead," said Martin Jackson, 59, as he held his cell phone aloft so his sister in Washington, D.C., could listen in. "This is the 12-bar blues right here. That's what it's all about."

'80s hitmaker El DeBarge ready for "Second Chance"

Posted by balistudent

In one of the more surprising events at the 2010 BET Awards, El DeBarge performed a medley of '80s hits by DeBarge, the family group he once sang lead for.

Having resurrected "All This Love," "Time Will Reveal" and the dance jam "Rhythm of the Night" that evening, the singer-songwriter is hoping to parlay the moment -- heralded by fans and critics alike -- into a successful comeback bid with his first album since 1994.

Due September 28, the aptly titled "Second Chance" not only launches DeBarge's new deal with Geffen, but it also signals his return after several run-ins with the law involving domestic violence and drug abuse. Having served a two-year term in California state prison after a 2008 bust for drug possession, DeBarge says he's ready to face the music.

"When I got locked up, that was my 'Oh, wow' moment," he says. "And the minute I stepped up to the mic after I was released, I rediscovered who I am and what I can do."

Still blessed with a three-octave range, DeBarge is co-writing and co-producing songs with such collaborators as Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Babyface (who worked on DeBarge's 1994 set "Heart, Mind and Soul"), Mike City, Geffen chief Ron Fair and the Avilia Brothers. He performed the album's title track on BET, and says a formal first single will be announced shortly. Among the other tracks slated to appear on the album are "How Can You Love Me So Much, Girl?," "Serenading You" and "Switch Up the Formats," a club song with 50 Cent.

"There's music to dance to and make love to, music to cry to," DeBarge says. "I'm starting from scratch, coming fresh. But my sound still embodies the same soulful, intricate harmonies."

In addition to logging collaborative credits with DJ Quik and RZA, DeBarge has watched his back catalog covered or sampled by artists ranging from the Notorious B.I.G. to Patti LaBelle. After leaving the family act in the mid-'80s, DeBarge logged several of his own hits -- including "Who's Johnny" and "Love Always" -- as well as a guest stint on Quincy Jones' 1990 No. 1, "The Secret Garden."

Confessing that he was nervous before being embraced by the BET audience, DeBarge has since opened for R&B singer Vivian Green and performed a surprise duet with Keri Hilson of the 1982 DeBarge family hit "I Like It" at the Essence Music Festival in New Orleans. He's now taking "a chill pill from the media" and settling down in the studio to finish the album.

"There's a certain missing feeling, a void out there that I'm more than happy to fill," the singer says. "Without criticizing what's out there now, I'm just going to do El DeBarge."

The group's "Need You Now" is the year's biggest-selling album so far with 2.4 million, according to Nielsen SoundScan figures through the week ended July 4.

Thanks to Eminem's recently released "Recovery," five albums -- compared to last year's four -- have sold at least a million copies in the first half of 2010.

Justin Bieber's "My World 2.0" is in second place with sales of 1.4 million, and Sade's "Soldier of Love" is third with a little over 1.2 million. Lady Gaga's "The Fame" is fourth with 1.2 million. "Recovery" has moved 1.1 million in just two weeks' time, placing it at No. 5 on the midyear list of best-selling albums.

Eminem and Gaga also made it into the quartet of million-sellers at the midyear point of 2009. The rapper's last release, "Relapse," was the third-best seller with 1.2 million, while Gaga's "The Fame" was fourth with 1 million. Taylor Swift's "Fearless" topped the list with 1.4 million, and the "Hannah Montana: The Movie" soundtrack was second with a little over 1.2 million.

Lady Antebellum's "Need You Now" also reigns as the year's best-selling country set, while Sade's "Soldier of Love" is the biggest R&B/hip-hop album. Eminem's "Recovery" is tops among rap efforts, and Jack Johnson's "To the Sea" (481,000) is the biggest rock album. Rounding out the genre rundown, Aventura's "The Last" is the largest seller among Latin albums (100,000), and Kings of Leon's "Only by the Night" is the best-selling catalog title (248,000).

Website posts recording of racist Gibson rant

Posted by balistudent

Mel Gibson is heard using a racial epithet and calling his ex-girlfriend a "whore" in a recording released by a celebrity news website Friday.

The two-minute recording posted by RadarOnline.com includes segments in which a voice sounding distinctively like the Academy Award-winner is heard telling his then-girlfriend, Oksana Grigorieva, that she is dressing too provocatively and that it would be her fault if she were raped. He uses the N-word at one point, and the recording is laced with his profanity.

Grigorieva recorded the actor-director because she was afraid he might harm her, the website reported. The actor is heard on the recording harshly criticizing Grigorieva for the way she dresses. He accuses her of lying to him about having breast implants.

"They just look stupid," Gibson tells her at one point in the recording. "Keep them if you want to. They look like a Vegas bitch, a Vegas whore."

"You look like a (expletive) bitch in heat, and if you get raped by a pack of (N-word), it will be your fault," Gibson is heard telling Grigorieva. "You provoked it. You are provocatively dressed."

Alan Nierob, a spokesman for Gibson, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

A phone message left for Grigorieva's attorney, Marci Levine, was not immediately returned.

It is unclear when the recording was made or in what context. It opens with Gibson discussing breast feeding of their now 8-month-old daughter. Toward the end, Gibson indicates he is done with the relationship.

"I don't trust you," the actor is heard saying. "I don't love you. I don't want you."

The recording has shades of another scandal for Gibson — his use of anti-Semitic and sexist remarks during a drunken driving arrest in 2006. The actor-director later apologized for the statements, which were included in a report by a sheriff's deputy who arrested Gibson that was obtained by celebrity website TMZ.

Also on Friday, Gibson's talent agency, William Morris Endeavor, dropped the actor, The Hollywood Reporter and Deadline.com reported.

The former couple have been locked in a bitter custody dispute in Los Angeles. The 40-year-old singer has accused Gibson of domestic violence, and sheriff's officials have launched an investigation.

Records in the court case, which may include the audio recordings, remain sealed.

RadarOnline has been posting text excerpts since July 1 of roughly 30 minutes of recordings of Gibson that she made before the pair broke up in April. Friday's posting was the first time that audio of the encounters had been released.

The recording released Friday is unlikely to be RadarOnline's last word on Gibson. Site founder and Executive Vice President David Perel told The Associated Press that more excerpts of audio that Grigorieva recorded will be posted to the site in coming days.

The site has posted text transcripts that include threats of violence and other racial slurs.

Perel said that RadarOnline has heard "a significant portion" of the recordings. He said the site has verified it is Gibson on the recording.

The website, owned by American Media Inc., which also owns the National Enquirer, did not say how it obtained the tapes. Perel told the AP the site did not pay for the recordings and that they did not come from Grigorieva.

Perel said the site felt it was an important story to publish, despite the disturbing content. He said in some of the recordings, Gibson and Grigorieva's 8-month old daughter can be heard screaming in the background.

The screaming is not present in the audio released Friday.

"We felt it was so newsworthy and so explosive we simply had to report what we heard," Perel said.

Rita Smith, executive director of the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, said Gibson was exhibiting the behavior of a "typical batterer."

She said there is likely to be significant backlash against Gibson, but whether there are real consequences for the actor remain to be seen.

"I think that people will be similarly outraged for awhile, like they were with Chris Brown, like they were with Alec Baldwin," Smith said. "This is one story out of thousands we hear every day."

Brown remains on felony probation for beating his then-girlfriend Rihanna last year. Baldwin was widely criticized for berating his young daughter in a phone message that was leaked during his divorce from Kim Basinger.

Smith said she hoped the incident would increase awareness of the dire straits of domestic violence shelters around the country, which are facing budget cuts.

"I think it would be better for Mel and for Oksana and for their future partners if there were some real consequences and some real change," she said.

Want To Keep Your Heart Heathly? We've Got The Answer!

Posted by balistudent on Thursday 8 July 2010

Poor heart health affects two out of three Australian families. Many Australians over 40 are concerned about their general heart health, others may have specific cholesterol issues while older people need to replenish declining levels of CoQ10. Whatever your concern there are nutritional supplements that can help.

Nutritional Insurance For Your Heart
Your heart is designed to last a lifetime, but you have to do your bit to help ensure it stays in good working order. Healthy heart function is dependant on a number of factors – including antioxidant status and the fat in your blood. Supplements can provide nutritional insurance for your heart health.

In 2002, the American Heart Association released a scientific statement on the effects of omega-3 fatty acids on heart function. Randomized clinical trials have shown that omega-3 fatty acid supplements can reduce cardiovascular events including non-fatal heart attacks and non-fatal strokes. Omega-3 can also slow the progression of arteriosclerosis in coronary patients. However, coronary artery disease patients may not be able to get enough omega-3 by diet alone. These people may want to talk to their health care professional about taking a supplement. Supplements may also help people with high triglycerides, who need even higher doses.

It is recommended that we consume 500mg of omega-3 fatty acids per day from oily fish (2-3 serves a week) or fish oil capsules.

Plant Sterols Can Reduce Cholesterol Absorption
Cholesterol maintenance is an important part of many people’s diet and lifestyle regimes. Plant sterols are fat-like compounds with a chemical structure that is very similar to cholesterol. However compared to cholesterol, plant sterols are only minimally absorbed. During digestion, the plant sterols compete with cholesterol for absorption. This means that less cholesterol is absorbed and more cholesterol is excreted. Reduced cholesterol absorption leads to lower blood levels of cholesterol.

A daily dose of 2-3 grams of plant sterols is recommended to help maintain healthy cholesterol levels. It also helps in maintaining the LDL:HDL cholesterol ratio within the normal range. Supplements are now available containing a relevant daily dose of 2 grams of plant sterols

CoQ10 Supports Heart Muscle Function
CoQ10 is a naturally occurring nutrient found in every cell of the body and has been extensively investigated for its benefits to the heart. It is a potent antioxidant and it helps protect heart cells from free-radical damage and therefore helps maintain healthy arteries. CoQ10 is produced in the body however the ability to produce CoQ10 declines with age, and so levels may drop at a time when they are most beneficial for health.

A daily dose of 100mg of CoQ10 has been shown to support healthy heart function and is recommended to maintain the body’s levels of CoQ10.

There are a number of new nutritional supplements that contain Omega-3, plant sterols or CoQ10. For a personal recommendation on supplements that can assist you maintain a healthy heart just ask the Naturopath at your local Healthy Life store.

Fight Off Cold And Flu This Winter... Naturally

Posted by balistudent

Do you tend to suffer from a cold or flu during winter? What makes it worse is the cough, sore throat, runny nose, muscle aches and pains, fever and headaches which tend to go with it. If you are susceptible to a cold or the flu chances are your immune system is not working properly. If this sounds like you it makes sense for you to boost your immune system so you can remain as healthy as possible during the colder months of the year.

The common cold and flu is generally due to nutritional deficiencies, weakened immunity and the fact that you are getting older. It is true, that as we age, our bodies start to slow down. Therefore, supporting your immune system is essential to good health, longevity and happiness.

Support Your Immunity And Speed Up Your Recovery
We can easily support our immune function, as well as help speed our recovery from winter discomforts, by ensuring an adequate intake of special nutritional co-factors. Vitamins and minerals including Vitamin A and C, Selenium, Zinc, Folic Acid and Vitamin B12 have been proven to support immunity. Whilst special herbs like Garlic, Olive Leaf, Echinacea, Astragalus and Andrographis can benefit your body’s natural resistance to colds and flu.

Stay Healthy This Winter!
Supplementing with Vitamin A or Beta-carotene can help to maintain the surface layer of your gastrointestinal and respiratory tract. This encourages a protective barrier against micro-organisms from entering your body and it also elevates your immune response.

Vitamin C is a great micronutrient to help protect against colds and flu as well as enhancing your immunity. It increases anti-viral and anti-bacterial activity in your body and stimulates production of white blood cells to fend off unwanted pathogens. It works particularly well with Vitamin E. Both of these nutrients are antioxidants which aid in the prevention of cell damage.

Restore Your Immune Function
To help restore your immune function try using Selenium as it is a powerful anti-oxidant, and increases production of white blood cells. It is particularly useful in helping to eliminate toxins from your body.

Zinc is also great for your immune system. Poor smell and taste, white spots on fingernails and poor wound healing are an indication of Zinc deficiency. Zinc helps destroy micro-organisms, protects against free radical damage and is a necessary component of white blood cell functions.

Folic Acid and Vitamin B12 are responsible for the production and responses of white blood cells. A deficiency in these vitamins can cause shrinkage of the thymus (a major gland of your immune system), therefore impairing white blood cell function and increasing risk of disease.

Special Herbs Help To Fight The Common Cold And Flu
Herbs are incredibly useful when your immune system is compromised. One of Nature’s most powerful weapons in the war against winter’s ills and chills is Garlic. Garlic has become synonymous with maintaining healthy airways and resistance to winters ills.

Next is Olive leaf. This herb is wonderful for immunity and helps to fight against viral, bacterial, fungal and parasitic infections. It is extremely beneficial for fending off colds and flu.

Echinacea is another special herb known to benefit immune function. It helps to activate your body’s natural defences against nasty bugs. Echinacea can help to protect against poor immunity and hasten recovery following ill health and upper respiratory infections such as catarrh, tonsillitis and sinus infections.

It is also an effective treatment if an infection or virus is contracted. Astragalus helps prevent the onset of the common cold and chronic viral infections. It has been shown to protect you against immune suppression.

Andrographis is a herb that has been used in traditional medicine in both India and China to help low immune function, digestion and liver problems. Researchers have studied the powerful immune benefits of Andrographis, where it has shown to strengthen natural defences against infections, such as the common cold and may help with cough, sore throat, runny nose, muscle aches & pain, fever and headaches.

With winter approaching it is best to prevent immune deficiency, rather than treat infections as they occur. By consulting the professional staff at your local Healthy Life store, you can avoid the winter blues easily.

Why Swimming Pools Can Make You Sick

Posted by balistudent

Can't wait to dive into that swimming pool? Well, here's a reason to hold your breath. That water could be teeming with germs waiting to get you sick.

More than 4,000 people were sickened by a recreational water illness between 2005 and 2006 alone, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

"The assumption that swimming pools are cess pools can be correct," Dr. Ranit Mishori, assistant professor of family medicine at Georgetown University Medical Center, told AOL Health. "Swimming is a wonderful activity, but everyone should take precautions."

The problem is you're sharing germs with everyone else in the pool, and they can be transmitted as easily as swallowing a mouthful of water while playing Marco Polo.

A well-maintained swimming pool uses the appropriate amount of chlorine and other disinfectants to kill bacteria which cause illness, explained Dr. Philip J. Tierno Jr., director of clinical microbiology and immunology at NYU Langone Medical Center in New York City. However, the time it takes chlorine to kill each germ varies. And the more crowded the pool, the faster the chlorine is used up. Although diarrhea is by far the most commonly reported, swimming-related illnesses can also manifest as eye, ear, respiratory, skin or neurologic infections.

"All it takes is one child with diarrhea, or whose diaper falls off, to contaminate a whole pool," said Mishori.

Feces, even a miniscule amount, "is by far the biggest health hazard in swimming pools," agreed Tierno.

Here are the pathogens you might be sharing the pool with this summer:

Cryptospordium: This chlorine-resistant parasite is the leading cause of gastroenteritis outbreaks at swimming pools, and can live for days in even properly chlorinated pools, according to the CDC.

Giardia: Like crypto, giardia is a microscopic parasite passed through feces, which can cause diarrhea.

Noroviruses: Exposure to this group of viruses can cause vomiting, nausea, stomach cramping and diarrhea that can last for several days.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa: This germ -- which is present in soil and water, not feces -- is responsible for "swimmers ear," an itchy or painful inflammation of the ear.

Unlike flu viruses, new strains of swimming pool microorganisms don't premiere each summer. "We've seen these same strains for years," said Tierno.

And because they aren't going away any time soon, the best way to stay safe is by practicing good personal hygiene.

Shower with soap before entering the pool. Don't swallow pool water, spit into the pool, or blow your nose into the water.

Children's swim diapers should be secured tightly and changed frequently, preferably not poolside. Anyone with diarrhea should skip the pool altogether.

Also, be on the lookout for lifeguards or facility managers running pH tests to make sure chlorine in the water is at an optimal level. Clear water and clean, not slimy, tiles are also good signs.

If the pool is standing room only on a hot day, reconsider getting in, since your risk of getting sick will be higher.

Very young children, pregnant women and people with immune deficiencies who may be more susceptible to illness, should limit the time spent in a pool.

"No one should avoid going to the pool altogether," noted Mishori. "Just be safe."

Exercise May Guard Girls Against Dementia in Senior Years

Posted by balistudent

By Randy Dotinga
HealthDay Reporter

WEDNESDAY, June 30 (HealthDay News) — If you want to help your young daughter avoid dementia much later on in life, a new study suggests it might be a good idea to send her outside to play.

Canadian researchers believe they’ve found a link between exercise in adolescence and fewer cases of senility in a woman’s senior years.

The study doesn’t definitively prove that exercise lowers the risk of dementia. And the research is only based on the recollections of older women, some with signs of dementia, about their childhoods.

Still, the findings suggest that “early life physical activity is important to late-life health and in particular in preventing late-life cognitive impairment. The sooner you start being physically active, the better it is,” said study author Laura E. Middleton, a researcher at the Sunnybrook Health Sciences Center in Toronto.

Scientists have been trying to document a link between exercise and dementia in later life in the hopes of understanding how physical activity affects the brain. The new study was designed to examine how exercise in youth may affect women in their later years.

The researchers asked more than 9,300 women in the United States about their exercise habits before the age of 18, at 30, at 50 and in late life. All were over 65, and their average age was 72.

The findings appear in the June 30 issue of the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society.

About 15 percent to 30 percent of the women reported being inactive during each period of their lives. Exercise occurring before the age of 18 seemed to be most influential: Close to 17 percent of those who didn’t report being active then had symptoms of dementia, while just 8.5 percent of the others did.

The researchers adjusted their statistics so they wouldn’t be thrown off by factors such as weight and age. After they did that, those who thought they exercised as kids were still 30 percent less likely to show signs of dementia.

The researchers don’t know if exercise in childhood directly leads to less dementia since other factors could be at play, such as diet. And exercising as kids — playing outdoors, for example — may set a pattern for physical activity later in life, Middleton said.

If there is a cause-and-effect link between early exercise and less mental decline, she said it may have something to do with the brain’s ability to change and develop new circuitry. It’s also possible that exercise leads to less clogging of blood vessels in the brain, she said.

It’s not clear whether men might benefit in the same way. The study only looked at women, Middleton said, and previous research has suggested that women benefit more from exercise than men.

Greg Cole, a brain researcher who’s familiar with the findings, said scientists are interested in the benefits of exercise when it comes to brain decline, but they’re focusing on studying the elderly at risk instead of looking backward at childhood.

Cole said the study’s reliance on the memory of the elderly “makes one wonder” about its reliability. But childhood habits could presumably lead to lifelong habits that might contribute to the benefits of adult exercise seen in other studies, said Cole, a professor of medicine and neurology at the University of California at Los Angeles.

Mental Health Woes Plague ‘Cyberbullies’ and Their Victims

Posted by balistudent

By Steven Reinberg
HealthDay Reporter

TUESDAY, July 6 (HealthDay News) — Teens who “cyberbully” others via the Internet or cell phones are more likely to suffer from both physical and psychiatric troubles, and their victims are at heightened risk, too, a Finnish study finds.

The survey of almost 2,500 teens found that more than 7 percent of teens bullied other teens online, about 5 percent were targets of this aggressive behavior, and 5.4 percent said they were both bullies and bullied.

“People may wonder how similar teens in Finland are to teens in the U.S., but national research that I recently published indicates that rates of traditional bullying and victimization from bullying are very similar among kids in both countries,” said Dr. Matthew Davis, an associate professor of pediatrics, internal medicine and public policy at the University of Michigan.

In fact, a recent U.S. survey of children aged 10 to 17 found that 12 percent were “aggressive” to someone else while online, 4 percent were victims of this type of online aggression, while 3 percent reported being both aggressors and targets.

The new study appears in the July issue of Archives of General Psychiatry.

As defined by the researchers, cyberbullying includes aggressive, intentional, repeated acts using mobile phones, computers (including e-mails and Facebook) or other electronic media against victims who cannot easily defend themselves.

The widely publicized death in January of 15-year-old Phoebe Prince, a Massachusetts teen who took her life after months of relentless cyberbullying, swung a national spotlight on the issue. Parents have also become increasingly concerned about both bullying and their children’s Internet safety, Davis said, and “for that reason, it is imperative that we track and address the problems of cyberbullying and cyberpredator behavior very actively in the near future.”

In addition, the fact that about a third of teens in the United States and Finland report that they are victims of some type of bullying behavior “is a red flag that communities, schools, and families must respond more effectively to bullying, whether it occurs in person or electronically. This is an area that needs more real-world attention and action,” Davis said.

For the study, a team led by Dr. Andre Sourander, from Turku University, collected data on 2,215 Finnish teens 13 to 16 years old. The teens were asked about cyberbullying and cybervictimization, as well as their overall health.

Teens who were victims of cyberbullying were more likely to come from broken homes and have emotional, concentration and behavior problems. These teens also found it harder to get along with others. In addition, they were prone to headaches, abdominal pain, sleeping problems and not feeling safe at school, the researchers found.

Cyberbullies were not without their own problems, however. Compared to teens who didn’t engage in such behaviors, they were also more prone to suffering from emotional, concentration and behavior problems. In addition, they had trouble getting along with others and often suffered from hyperactivity and conduct problems. Cyberbullies also frequently smoked or got drunk, reported headaches, and were more prone to not feeling safe at school, the study found.

Teens who were both cyberbullies and cybervictims suffered from all of these conditions, Sourander’s group found.

“Of those who had been victimized, one in four reported that it had resulted in fear for their safety,” the researchers wrote. The feeling of being unsafe is probably worse in cyberbullying compared with traditional bullying, they added. That’s because traditional bullying typically occurs on school grounds, so victims can at least feel safe within their homes. With cyberbullying, however, victims are at risk 24 hours a day, seven days a week, the team noted.

Richard Gallagher, director of the Parenting Institute at the NYU Child Study Center in New York City, believes that schools, parents and children can all play a role in dealing with cyberbullying.

“Some schools are very concerned about this,” he said. “And if they find out about it some schools are taking proactive action and there are consequences for the bully.” But other schools aren’t taking as active a role, Gallagher noted. “The proactive approach does seem to be helping with reducing the impact of bullying and teasing,” he said. “So, I do think it is appropriate for schools to do this, but to be careful how they do it.”

“In addition, most effective anti-bullying programs are ones that suggest that bystanders should be involved as well,” Gallagher said. In these cases other children or parents who know someone is being bullied should report it to the school, he explained.

Another expert, Dr. Thomas Paul Tarshis, director of the Bay Area Children’s Association in Cupertino, Calif., said the problem of cyberbullying is a growing one.

“The main place cyberbullying and cybervictimization begins from is the school,” he said. “So it is in the school-peer relations where kids are likely to put pressure on someone, to taunt someone through instant messaging or Facebook.”

Ideally, all schools should implement strict anti-bullying policies, but many are overwhelmed, he said. “Schools aren’t even doing enough with standard bullying,” he noted.

One positive of cyberbullying is that it leaves a data trial, Tarshis said. “So it’s easier to get evidence of cyberbullying and it makes discipline and follow-through better.”

Blizzard Official Forums Will Demand Use of Real Names

Posted by balistudent

Blizzard takes a brave step in countering the troubles of anonymity in the Internet (trolling, spamming, etc) by requiring users of their official forums to include their real names along with their in-game character names on it. This change is expected to take effect with the release of StarCraft II on July 27.

The company makes use of their new account management system called Real ID. All of Blizzard’s users are required to input their real name with it, which will be displayed in the forum, as well as among friends during gameplay.

The ruling has become a topic of debate in net privacy. Although it could make users think twice about making flaming remarks on the threads, it would also put their real identity at risk toward other problems like cyber bullying or phishing.
